Flatwater Skills Course

!

Looking to become the best skilled paddler you can be?

Or are you looking to become a Professional in the paddling industry? Trip Leader? Club Leader? Paddle Supervisor? Guide? Instructor? This Flatwater Skills Course is a pre-requisite to leadership, Guide and Instructor courses.

Minimum of 2 participants required.

You will learn, among other things, correct technique in the following:
  • Appropriate paddling attire

  • Lifting, carrying, transport
  • Craft setup and stowage
  • Donning Equipment

Course duration: 1 full day 9am to 4pm

What to bring: Sun protection, suitable warm clothing and footwear to get wet and swim in, kayak with standard cockpit and thigh bracing, flotation airbags if no bulkhead compartment in stern, Spraydeck, PFD, paddle, sponge, lunch, snack, water bottle

Prerequisites: positive attitude to learning, competent swimmer with underwater confidence.

Flatwater Guide Development Course

Learn the skills to become a Professional Flatwater Guide in the Recreation Industry.

This course is intended for those competent and experienced in flatwater paddling activities who wish to become a Flatwater Guide. 

This 2 day course will cover theory content and on water Guiding skills in preparation for individual assessment as a Flatwater Guide.

Minimum of 2 participants required.  

Course duration: 2 Days

What to bring: Suitable clothing and footwear to get wet and swim in, Kayak with spraydeck or SOT or Canoe, paddle, PFD, towing rig.

Prerequisites: Flatwater Skills course or equivalent, first aid certificate, and personal paddling experience of 6 trips at least 3hrs duration each. (contact us if unsure)

Flatwater Instructor Development Course

Learn the skills to become a Professional Flatwater Instructor in the Recreation Industry.

This course is intended for those competent and experienced in flatwater paddling activities, have undertaken a Flatwater Guide Development Course already and who wish to become a Flatwater Instructor. 

This 2 day course will cover theory content and on water Instructing skills in preparation for individual assessment as a Flatwater Instructor

Minimum of 2 participants required. 

Course duration: 2 Days

What to bring: Suitable clothing and footwear to get wet and swim in, Kayak with spraydeck or Canoe, paddle, PFD, towing rig.

Prerequisites: Flatwater Guide Course, first aid certificate, and personal paddling experience of 6 trips of at least 3hrs duration each. (contact us if unsure)

Whitewater Safety and Awareness

The Whitewater Safety and Awareness course covers Hydrology theory, features and hazards, rescue swimming and rescue ropework.

Minimum of 2 participants required.

Course duration: 1 Day

What to bring: Suitable warm clothing and footwear to get wet and swim in, you may need a wetsuit or dry wear. PFD, whitewater helmet, paddle, whitewater craft with added flotation

Prerequisites: Whitewater paddling ability. Participants must be fit and strong swimmers

Whitewater Rescue Course

!

The Whitewater Rescue course provides participants with the fundamentals of survival in moving water and is recommended for anyone who may be called upon to effect in-water rescues. Participants gain knowledge in hydrology and river features and hazards and rescue scene management. Practical skills include self-rescue, whitewater swimming and the fundamentals of shore, boat and in-water rescues. Additionally participants are introduced to the fundamentals of rope rescue including mechanical advantage and anchor systems.

Minimum of 2 participants required.

Course duration: 3 Days

What to bring: Suitable warm clothing and footwear to get wet and swim in, you will need a wetsuit or drywear. Rescue PFD, whitewater helmet, paddle and whitewater craft with added flotation.

Prerequisites: Whitewater skills course, eskimo rolling ability, and participants must be fit and strong swimmers

Whitewater Guide Development Course

Prerequisites: Flatwater Guide course, Whitewater Skills Award or equivalent, whitewater rescue course, first aid certificate, minimum 5 river trips on Grade 2 whitewater and ability to eskimo roll. (contact us if unsure)

Whitewater Instructor Development Course

Prerequisites: Flatwater Instructor course, Whitewater Guide course, Whitewater Rescue course, first aid, minimum 15 days paddling Grade 2 whitewater and 5 river trips on Grade 3 whitewater and ability to eskimo roll. (contact us if unsure)
