Joining a kayak or canoe course is a great way to learn a new skill and meet new friends.

 

The following Courses are designed to get you started in kayaking or canoeing and are also considered prerequisites for more advanced courses such as whitewater, surf and Sea programs.

Class sizes are kept small to maximise student learning.

Basic Skills - Sit on Top 3hr course

!

Sit on top kayaks are great fun and have opened up kayaking to everyone. Make the most of every paddling experience by taking part in a sit on top course. Learn essential paddle stroke technique, capsize and recovery, as well as tips from the pros on seat set up, gear use, transport, storage and maintenance. 

You will learn, among other things, correct technique in the following:

  • Equipment set up
  • Communication on water
  • Entry and exit
  • Launch and Land
  • Posture and Balance
  • Forward stroke
  • Reverse Stroke
  • Stopping Stroke
  • Forward Sweep
  • Reverse Sweep
  • Combination Sweep

  • Rafting Up
  • Low brace
  • All strokes stationary and underway
  • Capsize and Recovery
  • Capsize and swim with kayak to shore

What to bring: Sun protection, suitable warm clothing and footwear to get wet and swim in, PFD, paddle, sit on top kayak, snack, water bottle.

The starting point for all paddlers is the Basic Skills necessary to move your kayak easily and efficiently and learn how to quickly recover from a capsize.

Eskimo Rolling

Learn the ultimate self rescue technique - the Eskimo Roll.

 

Participants should be confident in the water and be comfortable upside down in a kayak. 

The eskimo rolling course is a private lesson with a professional instructor.

Course duration: 1.5 hours

 

What to bring: Suitable warm clothing, PFD, paddle, spraydeck and craft. You might wish to bring a whitewater noseplug.

Prerequisites: Competent paddle skills, good swimmer with underwater confidence.

Cost: $150 one on one
